MANX GRAND PRIX: WEDNESDAY REPORT AND RESULTS

Junior
Four and a quarter hours after the scheduled start the 2008 Junior Manx Grand Prix the race reduced from four to three laps got underway at 5.30pm. Simon Fulton No.1, led on the roads and time at Glen Helen for a few seconds, until No 9 Russell Mountford went through to take the lead, a moment later it was Daniel Kneen in front before Michael Weldon went through taking the lead on time by 0.4 of a second.

By Ramsey Philip McGurk went through leading on the roads, then the ‘charge’ which put Daniel Kneen in the lead by just 0.64 of a second from Michael Weldon with Adam Barclay moving into third some 12 seconds down.

At the end of the opening lap, Phil McGurk led on the roads, but called into the pits to refuel. Weldon went through, as did Dan Kneen, with the former leading on time by 0.53 of a second, as Ryan McCay moved into third 23 seconds down.

Ballaugh lap two and Weldon’s lead was up to 0.92 of a second with Kneen 39 seconds ahead of McCay. By Ramsey the lead had been cut to 0.22 of a second and the gap between second and third increased to 44 seconds.

Kneen was in front at the Bungalow by 0.22 of a second, at Cronk-ny-Mona in was Weldon by 0.33 of a second. At the end of the lap with the leaders coming into refuel the lead was up to 1.33 seconds in Weldon’s advantage.

Kneen was first out of pit lane in front of Weldon and was 9 seconds down leaving the pits. Glen Helen third and final lap and Kneen had a 4.88 second advantage over Weldon, as Philip McGurk moved into third.

Ballaugh saw the lead down to 1.70 seconds, still in Kneen’s favour. Ramsey and McGurk was still leading on the roads, although in third place. The lead was now 0.14 of a second but in Weldon’s favour!

The Bungalow showed Weldon’s advantage had increased to 0.23 of a second, as the duo circulated together, as McGurk remained in third place. Cronk-ny-Mona and the gap was 72.37 seconds from Ryan McCay with McGurk third.

Daniel Kneen finished first on the road to take his second victory in two days by 73.59 seconds
from Ryan McCay who was five seconds ahead of Philip McGurk in third.
Junior and Lightweight Classic
The second day's racing at the 2008 Manx Grand Prix was once again delayed by poor weather conditions resulting that racing would be held back until 3.00pm, with the roads closing one hour previously.

The late start meant that both races would be reduced from four laps to three, a distance of 113.19 miles.

The Clerk of the Course informed riders that conditions were far from ideal, with wet patches around the course and that the lack of adhesion flags would be shown as required as would the visibility flags over the Mountain section. 3.00pm and the flag set off Paul Coward on his own followed ten-seconds later by Alan Oversby and Wattie Brown, then fastest in practice and Monday’s Senior race winner, Ryan Farquhar on a Honda Drixton this time out.

Glen Helen lap one and it was 2007 Junior Classic winner Roy Richardson who enjoyed a 3.42 second lead on time over Ryan Farquhar, with Rich Hawkins in third spot a further seven seconds behind.

Ewan Hamilton victor of last year’s Lightweight was leading the Lightweight class at Glen Helen on lap one. At Ramsey on the opening lap, Oversby was leading on the roads, but it was still Richardson on time, an increasing lead of 14 seconds! Alan Oversby had moved into third place.

At the end of the first lap Richardson held a 28-second lead over Farquhar, who in turn had a six-second advantage over Oversby. Rich Hawkins, Paul Coward and Wattie Brown completed the top six.

The Lightweight class was headed by Ewan Hamilton who came in for a pit stop, with a 13-second lead over Jonathan Cutts with Peter Symes in third. By lap two Glen Helen reported that difference between the leading two Hondas was now 42 seconds.

By Ramsey, however Richardson was leading on the roads from Oversby. The gap between Roy and Ryan was 47.69 seconds. At the conclusion of the second lap Richardson’s lead was now over one minute, with Paul Coward now in third, after Oversby retired during the lap.

The Lightweights were led by Peter Symes with 19 seconds over Jonathan Cutts with Bud Jackson third - all three taking pit stops. Glen Helen on the third and final lap Richardson went through with a 62-second lead over Paul Coward who ‘enjoyed’ a one-second advantage over Farquhar.

In the Lightweight class it was still Symes from Hamilton with a 9 second lead. Through Ramsey for the final time Roy Richardson was 65 seconds ahead of Paul Coward with Ryan Farquhar third a further 10-seconds down. At the chequered flag Roy Richardson took his fifth ‘Manx’ win, his second Junior Classic. Second was Paul Coward with Ryan Farquhar third.

The Lightweight race was won by Ewan Hamilton having regained the lead at the Bungalow on
the third lap. Second was Peter Symes with Jonathan Cutts third.
