MotoGP Mugello: Martin dominates Moto3 free practice

Jorge Martin showed his dominance over the Moto3 field topping the timing sheets on the first day of free practice at Mugello’s MotoGP round.

The Spaniard who has failed to finish the last two races waited until the closing stages of the free practice session to go to the top of the timing sheets. Lapping all on his own, Martin got progressively quicker over the final five minutes on his Gresini Honda, ending the session with three consecutive fastest laps. The fastest of the trio was a 1’57.104 which was 0.339 seconds ahead of his second placed Aron Canet.

Tatsuki Suzuki was third fastest aboard the SIC58 Squadra Corse Honda ahead of the fastest KTM of Philipp Oettl. Kaito Toba made it two Japanese riders inside the top five, benefitting from being on the tail of Martin during his fastest lap as time expired.

World Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi was sixth fastest on his KTM but nearly seven tenths of a second behind Martin, just ahead of Jakub Kornfiel and John McPhee. Long-time session leader Fabio Di Giannantonio was ninth fastest and Le Mans Moto3 winner Albert Arenas rounded out the top ten with a 1’58.009.

Dennis Foggia and his Sky Racing VR46 KTM was eleventh on his home circuit with Marcos Ramirez just ahead of Nico Antonelli who suffered a nasty high side coming out of the fast downhill Savelli corner and was stretchered away and taken to the medical centre, although it was confirmed that he sustained no serious injuries.
