Michelin bosses have said they need to take more resistant tyres to the upcoming Red Bull Ring MotoGP in Austria after this week’s test showed current compounds will struggle to make a full race distance.

On the first day of testing, some riders weren’t able to do more than ten laps at the track, which is abrasive after being resurfaced for Formula One, but Michelin’s Piero Taramsasso is confident the French firm will be able to find a solution.

“We discovered that the track has a lot of grip and the track tends to heat up a lot. The asphalt is new  and being a black strip it heats up a lot. We reached the temperature of 50 degrees, which is much more than what we expected. The rear tyres was stressed a lot and for the race we will have to bring more resistant solutions,” he told bikesportnews.com.

“When you face a completely new track, we usually start from the softer option and then step by step we pass to the medium and to the harder solutions. It’s true that the first day the tyres didn’t last more than 10 laps, but already the second day the situation improved a lot thanks to better track conditions with more rubber on track, the set up of the bikes and we used harder solutions. As Andrea Dovizioso said, it won’t be an easy job but the test were important to understand what kind of tyres we need to bring in August.”
