Mir 'surprised' by laptimes on Suzuki MotoGP debut

Ecstar Suzuki MotoGP newboy Joan Mir revealed he was surprised by his laptimes at the Valencia test, especially with pace on used tyres.

The rookie finished less than a second behind fastest man Maverick Vinales on a 1'31.714 - which would have put him ninth on the Valencia grid - but he was also still doing mid-1'32s on a 25lap old rear Michelin.

"There is still a margin and I think it could have been a lot better. We have done everything more intense. There was a moment when we didn't have any more tyres left," he said.

"The temperature was dropping and the team decided not to go out and the others lowered the times. On Tuesday I said that I would like to go down a second and I went down a second.

"We have a good pace, which is what I'm happiest with in the test. Surprised to be only the second day and to be in decent times."
