MotoGP Assen: Redding tops wet third practice

Octo Ducati’s Scott Redding has topped this morning’s wet third MotoGP free practice at Assen, beating nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi by two-tenths with his final lap of the session that cemented his position at the top of the sheets.

Redding took the lead with ten minutes left to run with monstrous speed in the final sector - thtee-tenths faster than Marc Marquez - and then made sure a late charge from Rossi wasn’t good enough with a last lap of 1’46.441 compared to Rossi’s 1’46.672.

Unfortunately for the Gloucestershire rider, his pace means nothing when it comes to qualifying as the times in the dry from yesterday means Redding will have to move through the first session - but there is an advantage as the fastest men from Q1 will have had 15 minutes more than the automatic Q2 runners.

It was a game of two halves in the Repsol Honda garage as Marquez was consistently fast, ending in third placeon a 1’46.743 to finish three-tenths off Redding but Dani Pedrosa had a nightmare. The little Spaniard was dead last and nearly three seconds off the pace, struggling for grip and shaking his head as he passed his crew on pit wall. However, he was tenth yesterday, so goes into Q2 by right.

Maverick Vinales ended in fourth and 0.315s behind Redding with Johann Zarco in fifth and a further 0.038s back. Hector Barbera was in the top three until the final minutes of the session but slipped back to sixth while Aleix Espargaro was on fastest lap schedule with his final effort but got caught in traffic and lost half a second in the final sector. He ended in seventh and 0.495s off the pace.

Jorge Lorenzo, whose wet Assen demons have haunted him for years, ended in eighth with Loris Baz, who crashed late on, in ninth. Andrea Iannone completed the top ten with Danilo Petrucci, on the second Octo Ducati, in 11th and Andrea Dovizioso 12th.

Jonas Folger finished 13th, one ahead of last year’s Assen winner-in-the-wet Jack Miller and big mate Cal Crutchlow crashing with one minute left, rounding out the top 15. Sam Lowes finished one place further back with Bradley Smith in 21st.
