MotoGP Austria: Last lap gives Bezzecchi maiden Moto3 pole

A last second lap from Marco Bezzecchi gave the World Championship leader his first ever Moto3 pole position, but the star of the show was second placed Jorge Martin at the Red Bull Ring.

With a wet track but the sun shining, the session was all about whether the track would try in time for slick tyres to be used. After some early spills for John McPhee, Gabi Rodrigo and Bezzecchi amongst others, a dry line started to form through the Austrian hills.

With the track drying with every passing minute, times fell all through the session and with eight minutes to go Phillip Oettl gambled on slick tyres. When he was half a second quicker than Canet’s fastest time on wets the whole field quickly stuck slick tyres on. With almost half a second coming off every lap, it was a question of who would nail their lap with the conditions at their best.

That man appeared to be Jorge Martin. Just seven days ago the Spaniard was having his left arm screwed together in Barcelona but on the now dry line the Spaniard went half a second quicker than Bezzecchi and appeared to somehow have landed his seventh pole of the season.

With the flag out, Bezzecchi managed to go six tenths faster than Martin’s time and after using a slipstream looked to have timed his lap to perfection. Timing screens showed Martin was also under his best time by half a second but the Spaniard didn’t have the final tenth and ended up 0.078 seconds behind the Italians pole time of 1:38.617.

Albert Arenas will join the two World Championship challengers on the front row on his KTM, albeit qualifying 0.638 seconds off of Bezzecchi’s time.

Aron Canet was the quickest man on the fast drying track, however he couldn’t capitalise when the slick tyres were fitted. Tony Arbolino and Gabi Rodridgo will join Canet on the second row qualifying fifth and sixth respectively.

Marcos Ramirez will start from seventh with Phillipp Oettl and Eneas Bastianini rounding out the third row.

It was a session to forget for John McPhee who will start from 30th and last position after two crashes saw the Brit fail to take advantage of the dry line.
