Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez has taken pole for tomorrow’s Austrian MotoGP, leading the factory Ducati paring of Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo in this afternoon’s qualifying session.

Marquez got close to Andrea Iannone’s outright lap record with a 1’23.235 but bailed out of his final lap as he saw Dovizioso was in attendance, trying to get a tow around the Red Bull Ring. The Italian did all his qualifying laps on the medium rear while everyone else used the soft.

Lorenzo occupies the front row for the second time in his Ducati career, ending on a 1’23.621 which was enough to keep Maverick Vinales in check as the Movistar Yamaha man missed the top three once again.

Vinales was more than half a second off Marquez’ time and had Danilo Petrucci, who came through qualifying one, jammed firmly up his chuff with only 0.026 separating the Pramac Ducati man from the factory Yamaha.

Johann Zarco started slowly on his soft/soft tyre combination but gradually wound up to claim sixth place with a 1’23.879 and demote Yamaha stablemate Valentino Rossi to the head of row three.

Dani Pedrosa, who also came through qualifying one behind Petrucci, is next to Rossi with Cal Crutchlow putting in a 1’24.024 to claim ninth after his fastest lap was cut as he ran off track at turn one.

Andrea Iannone’s number one Ecstar Suzuki blew up in free practice four so he rode his second GSX-RR to tenth place with Karel Abraham, again firmly in the Caravan Club early doors behind Rossi, but bagging a 1’24.220 on his own to claim 11th with Loris Baz 12th. The Frenchman attempted to follow Marquez at the beginning of the session but the Spaniard ruined his party by abandoning his lap.

Jonas Folger was disappointed with his qualifying one lap and missed the second session by 0.166s so will start in 13th place, one ahead of Hector Barbera. Scott Redding will begin from 15th place with Bradley Smith just edging Sam Lowes for 21st.
