MotoGP Catalunya: Bastianini takes Moto3 win as Martin crashes

Leopard Racing’s Enea Bastianini took his first Moto3 win since Motegi in 2016 as he snatched a last-lap victory at the Catalan MotoGP this morning.

The Italian had been in contention for the entire clash, gambling on the hard rear tyre for pace at the end and it paid off as he swept into the lead at turn on one on the final lap and rode perfect sectors to cross the line by 0.167s.

Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi nicked second place by 0.003s as he outdragged Gabriel Rodrigo to the line as the Argentian took his first-ever world championship podium. Britain’s John McPhee took fourth for his first top ten of the season and first top six since Sepang last year.

It was disaster for Bezzecchi’s title rivals though. Jorge Martin crashed out of the lead with 13 left to run, losing the front at turn nine while Aron Canet and Nico Bulega, who had fought his way into the lead pack, were taken out by a mistake by Albert Arenas at turn four.

Tatsuki Suzuki, who had gone away with Martin at the start trying to break the pack using soft rears, nursed his way to fifth place with Alonso Lopez in sixth. Kaito Toba was seventh with Fabio DiGiannantonio coming back from a trip into the gravel early doors to eighth. Dennis Foggia and Raul Fernandez completed the top ten. Jaume Masia and Andrea Migno also clashed with four laps left and ended up in the turn one gravel trap.

Bezzecchi now leads the championship on 103 points with DiGiannantonio second on 84 and Martin on 80.
