MotoGP Catalunya: Dovizioso fastest as Marquez misses Q2

Andrea Dovizioso continued the Ducati domination at the Circuit de Catalunya as he topped the timing sheets, however World Championship leader Marc Marquez crashed out of the session forcing him to go through Q1.

The Italian’s best time of a 1.38.923 was 0.007 seconds faster than his team-mates fastest time from yesterday. Second fastest Jorge Lorenzo was one of three riders who failed to improve on his time from yesterday. Despite the Spaniard failing to improve on his Friday time, a Ducati 1-2 through free practice is an ominous sign after their Mugello success.

Maverick Vinales was third fastest and less than a tenth behind Dovizioso’s fastest time of the session on his Movistar Yamaha M1. The local rider sporting a new helmet and gloves with yellow tinges will be hoping that a strong qualifying performance will help him in the early stages of the race. Andrea Iannone was another rider who failed to improve this morning and his time from yesterday was good enough to keep him in fourth position.

Cal Crutchlow was third fastest in the session and fifth through combined free practice but did suffer a front-end crash going uphill at turn two. The Brit got on his second LCR RC213V to post his fastest time late in the session.

Johann Zarco was sixth and just two tenths behind the fastest time and less than a hundredth of a second ahead of Valentino Rossi. Danilo Petrucci, Dani Pedrosa and Tito Rabat rounded out the top ten and successfully booked a spot directly though to Q2.

After suffered his second crash of the weekend, Marquez ended eleventh fastest and will be forced to go through the qualifying one session for the first time this season. After an early run of laps Marquez found himself up to third position, but once again a crash just as times started to tumble in the closing stages of the session saw him fall down the time sheets and ultimately find himself on the outside looking into the top ten.
