MotoGP Catalunya: Early Bastianini surge secures Moto3 pole

An early run of laps by Enea Bastianini saw the Italian claim his first pole position of the 2018 season ahead of Jorge Martin and Tatsuki Suzuki.

The Italian has had an indifferent start to life with the Leopard team replacing 2017 Moto3 World Champion Joan Mir but an early run of laps on his own saw him post a 1.48.806 on just his fourth lap of the session.

Qualifying specialist Martin could only manage second place, 0.107 off of Bastianini’s time. It was an eventful session for the World Championship favourite. The Spaniard suffered an early crash, taking out Albert Arenas in the process. After a heroic effort from his Gresini team, Martin managed to get back out and improve his time, but it wasn’t enough to pip Bastianini.

Suzuki will start on the outside of the front row backing up his second place start from Mugello just two weeks ago. He will be just ahead of Ayumu Sasaki who himself started third in Mugello with both young Japanese riders impressing.

Aron Canet will start in the middle of the second row on his Estrella Galicia 0,0 Honda with Kaito Toba in sixth meaning we have three Japanese riders in the top six.

John McPhee was 0.385 off of Bastianini’s time and will head the third row in seventh with Gabi Rodrigo and World Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi rounding out the first three rows.

Another World Championship contender in Fabio Di Giannantonio was another crasher and despite somewhat salvaging his session, he will start tomorrows race down in thirteenth position.
