MotoGP Catalunya: Marquez fastest in mixed conditions

Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez topped the opening MotoGP free practice at Barcelona which began wet but but dried out sufficiently with 15 minutes left to run for slicks and meaningful lap times.

Marquez set a 1’45.875 and dictated the pace in the limited laps and was 0.326s faster than LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow with Mugello winner Andrea Dovizioso another three-tenths further back on a new circuit layout.

The layout has changed since last year with the chicane before the final corner now a little earlier and it caused confusion for Jack Miller who used 2016’s layout - also employed by F1 – until he was black-flagged by race direction.

Consequently, Miller’s laps were all deleted until he started using the correct layout and despite being one of the first riders out on slicks, he ended down in 12th place.

Fellow Honda rider Dani Pedrosa ended in fourth place after four laps, 0.746 down on Marquez who has a two-tenth advantage over the field in the last sector alone. Jonas Folger finished in fifth place with Maverick Vinales sixth and Britain’s Sam Lowes seventh.

Alvaro Bautista, Scott Redding and Danilo Petrucci completed the top ten with Lorenzo behind Miller and Valentino Rossi in 17th and nearly three seconds off the pace after 15 laps.
