MotoGP Catalunya: Martin takes pole in absurd Moto3 qualifying

Gresini’s Jorge Martin demolished the Moto3 pack to take the pole position and the outright lap record after taking advantage of a relatively clear track in an otherwise absurd qualifying session.

Every single rider returned to his garage with ten minutes left to run, all waiting for someone else to make a move on to track and it wasn’t until the clock clicked down to four minutes did Joan Mir and Livio Loi bite the bullet and roll down pitlane.

The entire pack, besides Martin who remained in his chair, was looking for a tow. Romano Fenati followed then-fastest man Aron Canet out of pitlane at walking pace and refused to take the initiative even when Canet make his feelings on the subject felt.

All of the pissing about meant that everyone only got one flying lap to set a time. Mir leapt into third place with a 1’54.036 but he was bounced down to fourth by Fenati while Marcos Ramirez found himself in fifth.

But Martin, who had minded his own business and not got on a caravan train, got a lap on his own and ended with a 1’53.386 - six-tenths faster then Canet’s lap set early in the session to take pole.

Juanfran Guevara stayed on the front row and Ramirez ended up in sixth after Martin’s lap. Scotland’s John McPhee finished in 19th place.
