MotoGP Misano: Lifetime ban for Fenati, says Crutchlow

Cal Crutchlow has said he thinks Romano Fenati should get a life ban after his idiotic move during today’s Moto2 race in Misano.

After some battling with Stefano Manzi, cameras captured Fenati pulling alongside Manzi on the back straight, reaching over and pulling the front brake lever of the Forward Racing man.

Fenati was black-flagged and has been given a two-race ban, although the LCR Honda man believes Fenati deserves a much harsher penalty.

“I think he should never race a motorcycle again,” said the Brit after his third place finish in the MotoGP race.

“I think he should’ve walked into his garage and I think his team should’ve kicked him right out the back. You can’t do this to another motorcycle racer. We are risking our lives enough and if somebody grabs your brake; sure, maybe there was contact before but there is contact all the time.

“From the replay, what Manzi did, Fenati ran wide and he tried to go under him and they made some contact, this is racing. To grab the brake lever on the straight, he deserves to be kicked straight out.”

With regards to his own race, Crutchlow took advantage of Jorge Lorenzo sliding out of second place to promote him onto the podium. However, Cruchlow said that he would’ve been happy with fourth and was pleased with his work over the course of the weekend.

“I think our speed at the moment is good, I capitalised on Jorge’s mistake to take a podium but I would’ve been thoroughly happy with fourth anyway,” he said.

“I think I rode a good race and had a good weekend apart from my mistake in qualifying yesterday. I wanted the pole position, but I don’t think I even broke into T1 trying to go for it so I think it lasted three seconds into the lap.

“Overall were very pleased. I rode a good pace in the race. I didn’t push hard in the start, I had the hard front tyre on and I knew I could finish in the top five today as long as we made it through the first laps with the full tank and the harder front. I was not overly confident as we only used it yesterday in FP4 a little bit, so I thought to just manage the situation. Then once I cleared Maverick and Rins I had a gap already to the guys.

“There were ten laps in the middle where I pushed, but not massively and I was taking a tenth and then losing a tenth and it just wasn’t enough as I thought they would start to battle in the end and maybe I could capitalise them. But the last ten laps I did my own thing and just cruised home and then obviously Jorge crashed and it’s nice to take home a podium for the team.”

Crutchlow ran the hard front tyre as a lot of the Honda riders have to do, however, the Brit said that due to the fact he was in so much clear he, he believes he could’ve used the medium front Michelin.

“Knowing how the race went now, I think we could’ve race the medium front tyre today,” explained Crutchlow.

“But the hard was fine; I had no real issue, only when I was behind Rins at the start with a full tank. But he gave up the place, I don’t know why but he was looking over his shoulder in the middle of the corner and then moved out the way for me so I said perfect and I pressed on a bit. I thought it was going to be a big battle today. Honestly I thought there was going to be seven guys for the podium at least but it strung out immediately and I was able to capitalise on that.”
