MotoGP Motegi: Home Moto2 pole for Nakagami, Morbidelli 15th

Japanese Moto2 star Taka Nakagami nicked Moto2 pole from under the nose of Alex Marquez with his final lap of today’s qualifying session while championship leaders Franco Morbidelli and Tom Luthi are down in 15th 13th places respectively.

Nakagami was nowhere in the damp conditions but when the track dried, the Team Asia star found his pace, taking top spot with a couple of minutes left. Marquez had other ideas and nipped in front with a 1’53.904 but Nakagami was not to be denied with a 1’53.776 on his 19th lap. Marquez had a problem with a stuck throttle while flat out early in the session but managed to put that to the back of his mind.

Tech3’s Xavi Vierge completes the front row as the last two laps of the session saw times drop dramatically. Mattia Pasini was in the mix right to the end and he will start from the head of the row two while Miguel Oliveira and Hafizsh Syahrin - who were 1.3s clear with seven minutes left - ended in fifth and sixth.

Both Luthi and Morbidelli changed from wets to slicks very late and didn’t take advantage of the drying conditions. They are both on the fifth row of the grid but only have to worry about each other as Oliveira, who is third in the title chase, is some 70 points behind Luthi who trails Morbidelli by 19.
