MotoGP Mugello: Dovizioso continues to set the pace

Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso continues to set the MotoGP Mugello pace, putting in the fastest time of this afternoon second free practice session with reigning champion Marc Marquez 0.164s behind him.

As with this morning’s session, the Italian used the hardest tyre in his allocation to go round in 1’47.479 while Marquez could only muster a 1’47.643 with Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo in third place and two-tenths behind his fellow Spaniard.

Andrea Iannone, on the second factory Ducati, jumped into fourth with his last flying lap to depose Britain’s Bradley Smith but the Italian was the only man in the top ten not to improve on his time from this morning.

Smith was glued to Cal Crutchlow for most of the period but came out on top by 0.088s over the CWM LCR Honda man. Crutchlow set a 1’48.124 for sixth place while Aleix Espargaro is riding through the pain of his injured thumb to not only put in 15 laps but set the seventh fastest time after a tow from Dovizioso.

Scott Redding is enjoying the high-grip surface at Mugello and managed eighth fastest, one place and 0.047s ahead of Valentino Rossi on the second Movistar Yamaha. Pol Espargaro completed the top ten which is covered by eight-tenths of a second.

Eugene Laverty had a small spill in the last corner and ended the session in 23rd but only 2.4s off the pace. Jack Miller finished as top Open Honda while Nicky Hayden, who has an experimental swingarm, was behind team-mate Laverty.
