MotoGP Mugello: Iannone takes pole; disaster for Marquez

Injured works Ducati star Andrea Iannone has taken his first ever pole position for tomorrow’s Mugello MotoGP after bagging a perfect tow from second-placed man Jorge Lorenzo to set the fastest ever MotoGP lap at the Italian track.

But it was disaster for reigning champion Marc Marquez who didn’t make it out of qualifying one after being pushed out of the top two by a last fast lap by Pramac Ducati’s Yonny Hernandez. Marquez will start from 13th on the grid after struggling to stop his RC213V twice into turn one. A small tantrum ensued.

At the front, Iannone used his tow and the soft-tyre concession to set a 1’46.489, slipstreaming Lorenzo across the start/finish line to beat the former champion by 0.095s while carrying a fracture of his right humerous.

Iannone’s team-mate Andrea Dovizioso took the final spot on the front row after a strategy to get tow from test rider Michele Pirro didn’t quite pay off and he ended on a 1’46.610 which was just enough to push Cal Crutchlow on to row two.

The Briton was just two-tenths slower than the Italian but doesn’t have the soft-option tyre to use and he will be pleased to finish top Honda by three places. He has Aleix Espargaro next to him with Pirro in sixth place.

Dani Pedrosa, who is still recovering from his arm-pump surgery, is seventh, one place ahead of Valentino Rossi who sits in his now customary eighth place. Maverick Vinales and Pol Espargaro complete the top ten.

Espargaro’s Monster Yamaha team-mate Bradley Smith ended in 11th and he has Hernandez next to him. Danilo Petrucci and Hector Barbera join Marquez on row five.

Scott Redding couldn’t find any pace in qualifying one and slipped back to 17th while Eugene Laverty also struggled and starts from 24th.
