MotoGP Phillip Island: Crutchlow fastest as second session abandoned

Britain’s Cal Crutchlow ended the opening day of MotoGP free practice at the top of the timesheets after this afternoon’s second session was abandoned due to heavy rain.

Crutchlow just edged out Danilo Petrucci and hometown hero Jack Miller in the morning session but didn’t even get into his Alpinestars after lunch, sitting in the garage, cuddling a fan heater.

The second session got underway following a delay but after six riders completed a total of 15 laps, the rain got worse and it was cancelled as the track was waterlogged and too cold.

It could prove costly for Valentino Rossi as his laptimes from the first session were cancelled after he completed more than ten laps on the super-soft front tyre which is against Michelin’s rules.

If it is as cold and wet tomorrow for free practice three, he could find himself in qualifying one as the laptimes from free practice one will make up the top ten.

That is, of course, good news for the likes of Crutchlow but bad for Jorge Lorenzo as he is currently 19th and 4.7s off the pace as his struggle with Michelins in the wet continues.
