MotoGP Phillip Island: Rossi penalised for overuse of wet front tyre

Movistar Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi ended the opening wet MotoGP free practice at practice at Phillip Island dead last after his laptimes were cancelled by race direction.

Rossi had been sitting pretty in second place on timesheets but was found to have used the super-soft front wet for more than the ten laps allowed, so those were stricken from history.

“Valentino Rossi was found to have used the 1008B Super Soft Full Wet Front Tyre more than 10 laps, so he was imposed a cancellation of the lap times during the run where the 1008B tyre was used illegally,” said a sanction statement.

Michelin have clarified their position on the use of the tyre:

“The extra-soft rain tyre was brought for conditions such as this morning when it was very cold and wet.

“It is designed for those conditions and especially to give the riders extra feel to get used to the track, but Michelin don't want it to be used for more than 10 laps to avoid any degradation such as seen at Brno. That said if those conditions were expected to continue it could do race distance, but no-one can predict such things.

"It can also be used for qualifying, but again for no more than ten laps. All riders were informed beforehand about the suitability.

“This is similar to what Michelin does with soft slicks as well. Some of those that are taken for use in countries for morning sessions where colder temperatures are likely in the morning, would not be suitable for race conditions and the teams manage that accordingly

“It will not change for Sunday's race - if it is cold and wet - the extra soft won't be used as the soft wet will perform very well.”
