MotoGP Qatar: Lorenzo taking Ducati debut 'step-by-step'

Former MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo will focus on his pace over race distance at the opening round in Qatar this weekend and make ‘step-by-step’ improvements to the Desmosedici GP17.

The Mallorcan still doesn’t know what his potential is at the desert track but it has been good to the Bologna manufacturer in recent years with Andrea Dovizioso finishing runner-up in 2015 and 2016. Lorenzo found a chunk of pace on the final day in testing, finishing less than two-tenths off the pace.

“At each track, I don't know what my limit is, the level I can find, so I don't know the potential in this track this weekend, if it is far, the same or even better. I imagine we have to improve in some areas and that is my goal for the future and part of my adaptation in this moment,” said Lorenzo, speaking at the track.

“It's a new era for me so I'm really looking forward to starting, going step-by-step and coming better, little-by-little. That is how pre-season has been going, especially here in Qatar in the last test.

“We made a big progression and on the very last day we were very close to the first ones - maybe for one lap a little bit closer to the pace, so that is our goal in these next few days: to improve a little bit the pace and be competitive. I'm sure we are going to be better and that's a good sign for me and the bike, to get more compact and improve the bike for the future.”
