MotoGP Qatar: Moto3 pole for Masbou; McPhee fifth

Saxoprint RTG’s Alexis Masbou timed a perfect slipstream down the Losail start/finish straight to claim pole for tomorrow’s Moto3 race at the Qatar MotoGP round while Scotland’s John McPhee performed the same trick for fifth.

Masbou got a two-bike tow across the line to set a 2’06.170 to nip ahead of Isaac Vinales by 0.067s while Nico Antontello rounds out the front row with a 2’06.245 and is just 0.075 down on pole but had his last fast lap interrupted by a gaggle of caravanners.

McPhee is still learning the 2015 Honda and has cut seconds off his laptime over the course of the weekend. His fifth place was only 0.084s behind Masbou and 0.001s slower than Francesco Bagnaia in fourth.

Estrella Galicia wunderkind Fabio Quartararo ended in sixth place and demonstrated how much a tow was needed down the straight for a fast time. He put in any number of fastest laps up until the drive for the line, only to miss out as he was clearing his own air.

Danny Kent, who was in the top two throughout free practice, also couldn’t find a decent tow and ended down in ninth place but is only a quarter of a second off the pace.
