MXGP Neuquen: Cairoli draws first blood with qualifying win

Defending champion Tony Cairoli (Red Bull KTM) kicked off the defence of his MXGP title with a commanding qualification victory at the opening round of the FIM Motocross World Championship today at Neuquen in Argentina.

The Italian led around the first corner before being passed by his team-mate Jeffrey Herlings. However, after holding the lead for a handful of turns the 23-year-old Dutchman made a succession of mistakes and slipped down the order to seventh.

At the head of the field, Cairoli looked razor-sharp as he pulled out a seven-second lead over Belgium’s Clement Desalle (Monster Energy Kawasaki) and his compatriot Jeremy Van Horebeek (Monster Energy Yamaha). Controlling the race from the front, Cairoli – who’s going for a record equalling 10th world title in 2018 – never looked flustered and even after backing it down for the final few laps still ran out winner by almost six seconds.

The result gives him first gate pick for tomorrow’s points-paying races.

With three laps to go Van Horebeek found a way past Desalle to take second with 2015 champion Romain Febrve (Monster Energy Yamaha) from France fourth following a solid performance that saw him put in a series of strong passes after ending the opening lap back in eighth.

British hopefuls Shaun Simpson (Wilvo Yamaha) and Max Anstie (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) both gated well and held it together on the flowing South American circuit to finish fifth and sixth ahead of Herlings who stuck a late pass on Switzerland’s 2017 MX2 vice-champion Jeremy Seewer (Wilvo Yamaha).

Frenchman Gautier Paulin (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), who finished third in last year’s championship, was ninth almost half-a-minute behind the winner with Belgian Julien Lieber (Monster Energy Kawasaki) rounding out the top 10.

Tommy Searle (Bike it DRT Kawasaki) came home 12th but Maxxis ACU British MX1 Champion Graeme Irwin (ASA Hitachi KTM UK) struggled to find his feet in his debut MXGP race and finished a disappointing 21st.
