Rossi to benefit in MotoGP penalty point shake-up

MotoGP bosses have altered the rules regarding penalty points accrued by riders so that no-one serves the same penalty twice in the same 12-month period which could benefit Valentino Rossi in 2016 as he could have six points to play with at the end of the season.

Under the 2015 regulations, Rossi could serve another back-of-the-grid start should be get another sanction after the 2015 Misano point is removed as the Sepang three points would still be live.

However, under the 2016 rules he effectively can’t be tried for the same crime twice, so if he drops back to zero points after Sepang, he can then rack up six points before being handed a pitlane start, bypassing the four-pointer he was given last year.

The new rules are as follows:

Penalty points may be imposed by GP Race Direction on a rider in any number from 1 to 10, points are cumulative and expire after a period of 365 days from the date they were imposed.

Automatic sanctions apply to a rider accumulating points as follows:
4 Points - Start the next race from last grid position.
7 Points - Start the next race from pit lane.
10 Points - Disqualification from participation at the next event (or from
the race results if this occurs at the last event of the season).
Points re-set to 0 after a rider reaches 10 points and serves a disqualification.

(Clarification: Each sanction due to accumulation of penalty points (back of grid start for 4 points, pit lane start for 7 points, suspension for 10 points) can be served only once by each rider, until the rider passes 10 points. A penalty of up to 3 points can be imposed without a prior hearing being necessary).
