Thruxton BSB: Irwin bags maiden podium in race two

Be Wiser Ducati’s Glenn Irwin did not expect to clinch his maiden MCE British Superbike podium so soon in the season, but for the rookie he exceeded his own expectations and his dream of a rostrum spot came true, with a third place finish in race two at Thruxton.

The Northern Irishman is not getting too carried away as he wants more top three finishes. He listened to his team who told him to save the tyre, and he did just that and with three laps remaining upped his pace and overtook JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam to leap into third.

At one point in the second race Irwin thought that he may have ‘over saved’ the tyre, but he had done enough and was even hunting down second place finisher, Honda Racing’s Jason O’Halloran on the final lap.

The new dad finished race one in eleventh, and with his points added from his third place win he is now twelfth in the overall championship standings.

“The team have been so good and the bike is incredible. They told me how to ride the thing and they told me to be sensitive and to save the tyre and I saved it - to the point where I thought that I over saved it, maybe I should have gone a lap earlier but it was mega,” said Irwin, speaking to bikesportnews.com from the track.

“It is an amazing feeling. I am not going to get carried away, I want to get a lot of these podium’s and it is a really good team to be in and they have made it possible and the feeling right now with everyone is good.

“Paul is a great team boss, we will enjoy the moment now and go back to work on Tuesday at Cadwell. It is like a dream and I didn’t think it would happen at round six. I said all year maybe top ten at this stage, top six later on in the year and a podium would be a dream and my dream has come true half way through [the season].”
