TT 2018: 'So far, so good' for BMW's David Johnson

Australian ace David Johnson is well placed for a good result in tomorrow’s Superbike race at the TT with the Gulf BMW rider having featured at the sharp end of the leaderboard in every session.

The Adelaide rider’s quickest lap of the week so far is 129.632mph, set on Thursday evening despite the clutch slipping, whilst he also topped the Superstock class during the same session.

“So far, so good,” said Johnson, talking to bikesportnews.com. “We’ve been making changes all the time to both bikes and although I still haven’t got the best feeling with the Superbike, each time we go out, we’re making progress. Last night was my fastest ever lap during practice week and that was with the clutch slipping and with quite a few damp patches around the course like at Ramsey and various places over the Mountain.

“The lap still felt fast, faster than it actually was, which is a strange feeling and I was on a used tyre so if I can set that lap time with an old tyre and with the clutch slipping, it bodes well for the race day. I’ve been riding well within myself and keeping everything smooth so know there’s more to come. We’ll fit some new tyres for tonight’s session and get two laps in so we’re ready for the race.”

“It was nice to be the quickest Superstock bike last night but it’s still quite savage over the bumps and kicking me around quite a bit over the bumps. It doesn’t feel that great at the moment but the lap times are good, which is obviously a good sign. If we can improve the geometry and suspension a bit more, it should allow me to go a fair bit quicker.”
