Four-time World Superbike champion Carl Fogarty believes that the series needs ‘its edge back’ and that the sport needs more rivalries too.

The ‘I’m a Celebrity’ winner was excited by the recent spat between Kawasaki’s Jonathan Rea and Ducati’s Chaz Davies and it reminded him of when he had a war of words with his counterparts on and off the track, most notably with Scott Russell.

Foggy, as he is more commonly known to fans is also not too keen on the new Saturday and Sunday race format either, and prefers the two races on the Sunday instead.

But when it comes to racing, Fogarty still holds a strong interest in the sport, and predicts that a Brit will once again make it on to the podium at the English track on the weekend.

“I am predicting another Brit, I usually go for Jonathan, but Tom has had such a lot of success here and you kind of fancy him as it’s a circuit that suits him a lot, and I think Jonathan, Chaz and Tom could be in the top three,” said Fogarty, speaking to Biksportnews.com.

“I think the Kawasaki’s and Ducati teams have a lot of help from the factory, but I am on the outside theses days but I think what Yamaha needs is a lot more help from the factories to get their bikes somewhere close to the Ducati and Kawasaki.

“We miss that I suppose (the spats), I look back on stuff I said and cringe a bit, but there were some big characters back then and we used to say a lot of bad stuff about each other, these days everyone seems really nice and they all get on, but it was nice to have an edge to it - bring it on I say.”

More rivalries and more riders from more countries - that’s King Carl’s answer to getting more people through the gates at World Superbike events. Fogarty is still really enjoying the racing, but says there needs to be that extra spice between rider’s to raise the public’s interest at the track and TV viewers too.

Fogarty added: “I think there are so many Brits out there and so many Brits who are fast and at the front and that should be a good thing, but in some ways it feels like a bad thing. Back in my day it was always me against two bad guys - a loud mouth American or loud mouth Australian who were both as bad as each other and wanted to win and TV loved it and created an interest. It does miss that a little bit but in some ways its good not to have that as well really.

“More rivalries will help and faster guys from other countries will help for sure and I would like to see it go back to the old format. I really don’t get the Saturday race at all, it’s not for me and I a lot of people are missing it as they forget it is even on. In my day it was the biggest four stroke, these days it is not - MotoGP is. It’s still a world championship
and hopefully it will get stronger and bigger but the races are always going to be great and it will this weekend.”
