WorldSBK top man Daniel Carrera believes more changes are required to stop his championship from being a two-manufacturer chase in 2018 but says the alterations will not be radical.

Carrera wants to see more manufacturers in with a shot at the podium every weekend and says that will be down to a combination of factors. He would like to see fewer Brits on the grid and also an exhange of riders from the MotoGP paddock that aren’t at the end of their careers.

“The situation is we are having a conversation with the manufacturers we don’t like to see this gap between Kawasaki and Ducati and the rest, they have the potential the budget, the riders, but anyway we want a closer performance from the manufacturers,” Carrera told bikesportnews.com.

“Every manufacturer have their points of view and we are taking all the inputs and with the technical directors and will try to set up something, but it is too early to tell you what will be the changes. We don’t want something radical, but we want to implement changes that will guarantee to improve the situation.

“We would like to see more exchange of riders between the championships and we are trying to promote that. We have some riders in MotoGP, Franco Morbidelli is leading Moto2 and he grew here. We will be working with the manufacturers to make it happen, but it is a long process. We don’t want to bring riders that are at the end of the career, we want to bring riders that are still competitive so they bring a value to the championship.”

Carrera is thinking progressively about the future and is so far pleased with the new SSP300 format which he believes will encourage more Superbike riders from different countries.

But he also said there are plans in the works for BSB to run an SSP300 series to funnel more of our riders into the WorldSBK paddock.

“I would like to see more nationalities but this is the situation, if we have that amount of British riders it is because BSB is one of the best national championships in the world. We want to work to have new nationalities.

“We have a new project this year based in the Supersport 300, so what we are doing is to try and generate links with the most powerful championships and federations, with MotoAmerica and Australian championships.

“Australia already have the 300, and MotoAmerica will most probably have it next year and BSB, they are planning to implement it - to create a link that the winners of the domestic series will have a direct opportunity in our championship so we would be feeding the 300 with new nationalities with the hope they can grow inside our paddock in the future.”
