Silverstone BSB: Irwin suspects pre-season sandbagging

Quattro Kawasaki’s Glenn Irwin believes that some teams and riders were involved in a bit of pre-season sandbagging so this weekend’s Bennetts British Superbike opener at Silverstone could be ‘interesting’.

Irwin, along with team-mate Ben Currie, makes his competitive debut on the ZX-10RR and has large – or small depending on your point of view – boots to fill as he takes over from reigning champion Leon Haslam in Pete Extance’s squad.

“Testing threw up so many different results. The top three riders were constantly changing so no-one really knows who is going to come out on top yet,” said Irwin.

“Jason O’Halloran finished the final test at the top of the timesheets so he’s the one to watch currently.

Irwin took his first BSB win at the Northamptonshire circuit in 2017 and is hoping to at least step on to the podium.

“The competition looked strong in testing although I think some people were holding back so round one is going to be interesting. I am confident in the package that we have and that we can fight for the podium positions.

“The new Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10RR is a phenomenal machine and the new engine has even more power. Although we didn’t quite manage to find the right setting for me during testing, I know what the bike is capable of.”
